Introduction:
A catalytic converter works by using a catalyst to stimulate a chemical reaction in which the by-products of combustion are converted to produce less harmful and/or inert substances, such as the very poisonous carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide. In automobiles, this typically results in 90% conversion of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides into less harmful gases
Reduction of nitrogen oxides to nitrogen and oxygen: 2NOx → xO2 + N2
Oxidation of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide: 2CO + O2 → 2CO2
Oxidation of unburnt hydrocarbons (HC) to carbon dioxide and water: CxH2x+2 + [(3x+1)/2]O2 → xCO2 + (x+1)H2O
And usually the catalytic converter contains two types: Dirct-fit Catalytic converter and Universal Catalytic converter.
Direct-Fit Catalytic Converters
Manifold and direct- fit catalytic converters are designed to bolt onto the vehicle without any additional adjustments to the mount space and the exhaust system. They are manufactured using the features and constraints specific to the vehicle in which they are installed. They are available along with their requisite accessories such as flanges, pipe extensions and brackets.
